Football Team Makes An Unscheduled Stop In Tunica, MS

Aircraft Carrying McNeese State Cowboys Blew A Tire On Takeoff

The McNeese State Cowboys were headed to Columbia, MO for a game against Missouri when the Allegiant Air jet taking them to Columbia hit a light at the end of the runway and blew a tire as it was departing Friday afternoon.

Captain Robert Norman made the decision to divert to Tunica, MS, because he knew there was a facility at the airport which could replace the tire. But after leveling off, he realized there might be more than just a damaged tire to worry about.

McNeesesports.com reports that the plane landed safely on the three remaining main gear tires in Tunica, and most of the 137 passengers on the jet didn't know there was a problem until they saw the emergency equipment there to meet the aircraft.

The plane landed about 1419, and was towed from the active runway. Allegiant sent another aircraft from Detroit to take the passengers on to Columbia, MO. The team reportedly arrived at its hotel there about 2020 local time.
