In what may be a stunning mis-step that could critically impair a facet of the aviation world that many consider to be THE entry-level for the entire community, the FAA is readying extensive and inexplicable restrictions on the model aviation community. The Academy of Model Aeronautics is asking for assistance in what it describes as an urgent matter. The FAA recently unexpectedly informed the AMA that, contrary to earlier commitments to the organization, the agency is planning to limit all recreational model aircraft operations to 400 feet in controlled airspace and there will be no exceptions. Although a 400 feet limit may work for a large number of AMA members, they have a number of disciplines that will need to go higher than these proposed heights. The Collings Foundation has issued a statement concerning the accident which occurred October 2nd involving its B-17 "Nine-O-Nine" at Bradley International Airport in Connecticut. "Please join the Collings Foundation in our thoughts and prayers with those who were on the tragic flight of the B-17 Flying Fortress “Nine-O-Nine” on Wednesday, October 2nd. We will be forever grateful to the heroic efforts of the first responders at Bradley International Airport and the assistance of all local agencies in the days after the crash," the foundation writes. uAvionix Corporation has acquired AeroVonics LLC. uAvionix Corporation will incorporate the AV-20S MFD and the AV-30 PFD products into their existing product line. The acquisition marks uAvionix’s first foray into advanced digital cockpit displays for the GA market. The AV-20S series MFD is approved under the FAA’s Non-Required Safety Enhancing Equipment (NORSEE) process and can be installed as a Minor Alteration in most GA aircraft. The AV-20S provides multiple functions such as a Standby Attitude Indicator, derived Angle of Attack, Clocks and Timers, Outside Air Temperature, Density Altitude and a G Meter, all with a 30-minute internal battery backup. The AV-30 series PFD is currently available for experimental aircraft and is on track to receive STC approval for certified aircraft. The AV-30 includes a highly customizable user interface with displays of Primary Attitude, Slip and Direction of Flight. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
