Amazon Mogul Hope To Raise Apollo 11 Engines

Jeff Bezos Says He Has Located The F1 Motors In The Atlantic

Bezos Expeditions founder Jeff Bezos, who is perhaps best know as the business brain behind amazon.com, says his organization has located the F1 engines from the first stage of the Saturn rocket which boosted the first men to the moon deep in the Atlantic ocean ... and he wants to undertake a recovery effort.

Bezos wrote on his blog "I'm excited to report that, using state-of-the-art deep sea sonar, the team has found the Apollo 11 engines lying 14,000 feet below the surface, and we're making plans to attempt to raise one or more of them from the ocean floor. We don't know yet what condition these engines might be in - they hit the ocean at high velocity and have been in salt water for more than 40 years. On the other hand, they're made of tough stuff, so we'll see."

On the blog, Bezos says he realizes that even if the engines are recovered, they still belong to NASA. He says if it is possible to recover more than one of the F1 engines, he has asked the space agency if they would consider donating one to the Museum of Flight in Seattle, which is where Amazon in headquartered. He says no public funds will be used in the salvage attempt. (NASA Image)
