Maltese Court Rules Finders-Keepers For Luggage Loader

Can Claim $5000 He Found Onboard Plane

A Maltese court has ordered the country's Customs Department to return $5,000 to a luggage loader who found the cash onboard an airplane in July 2000.

The Malta Times reports that when John Fiteni discovered the cash onboard an airplane that arrived in Malta from Tripoli, he promptly turned it in to customs... but when no one claimed the booty, he asked for it back.

Customs refused his request, however, citing a law that made it illegal to hold foreign currency.

On Monday, however -- after nearly six years -- the court decided Fiteni had a right to the money, after all. No word on whether Fiteni is entitled to any interest on the cash...
