What's This? Tax Relief For Aircraft Owners?

South Carolina County Gives 'Em A Break

Well, it's not much of a break, but every little bit helps, right?

The Horry County (SC) Council last week voted to cut taxes on general aviation aircraft, dropping the assessment ratio from 10.5 percent to four percent. While the former rate generated about $20,000 a year for the county, the new tax will only generate about $7,000.

While the measure passed, it did face stiff and lingering opposition from a couple of council members. Councilmen Marion Foxworth and Mike Ryan voted against the change. "This is nothing more than a rather large tax cut for a rather small group of people," Foxworth said, as quoted by the Myrtle Beach Sun-News.

But other council members said the change was vital because aircraft owners were voting with their wings and moving their planes out of the county. Right now, about 146 people have registered general aviation aircraft in Horry County.
