Runway Closure Announced At Salina, Kansas

Will Be Out Of Service For Two 2 Week Periods In July And September

The Salina Municipal Airport primary runway will be closed from July 20 to August 19 and again for approximately 14 days in early September, due to airport improvement construction.

Runways 12-30 and 18-36 will remain open during this phase of construction. Runway 4-22 will periodically be closed during this time. During the closure the north 4,800 feet of runway 17-35 will be resurfaced and taxiways Alpha, Charlie, Delta and Echo will be improved.

"The existing surface of taxiway Alpha was last resurfaced in 1985," said Tim Rogers, A.A.E., Salina Airport Authority executive director.  "It is at the point that it needs to be rehabilitated for safer use."

When pavement deteriorates, the biggest problem is that it starts to unravel and create an unsmooth surface to land on and foreign object debris (FOD) issues.  It, along with the other taxiways, has exceeded its expected life.  Improvements will also be made to the shoulder of Alpha, Charlie, Delta and Echo.

"In addition to paving work, drainage work and pavement removal work, we are installing new LED taxiway edge lighting that is more energy efficient," said Rogers.  "We are building for the next 15 years of service."

This project is funded in part by an Airport Improvement Program grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation.
