Delta To Outsource Heavy Maintenance

Atlanta And Tampa's Loss Is Miami and Vancouver's Gain

Delta Airlines says it will outsource all heavy maintenance, a moved aimed at saving the financially-troubled airline's bottom line.

Tuesday's surprise announcement means Delta will send up to 70-percent of its entire fleet to both Florida and British Columbia.

In Miami, Avborne will do the heavy maintenance on Delta's MD-88s and MD-90s. Air Canada Technical Services will do the same on Delta's Boeing 757s and 767s.

The move is not without its critics, who worry about whether Delta is putting cost issues ahead of safety.

"Safety of our aircraft maintenance was not and is not negotiable," said Delta Senior Vice President Joe Kolshak. "It remains our No. 1 priority, more than cost, and will not be compromised." He was quoted in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Delta expects the process of outsourcing to be completed sometime this summer.
