Philadelphia Police Department Takes Bids For Third Helicopter

Bell, AgustaWestland Reportedly In The Running

The Philadelphia Police Department last week collected bids in anticipation of adding a third helicopter to its law enforcement fleet, and two companies appear to be in the running for the contract.

The department currently flies two Bell 206 helicopters, according to a report appearing on Philly.com. But AgustaWestland is currently delivering AW119 aircraft from its final assembly plant at Northeast Philadelphia Airport, which is near the PPD's air base.

AgustaWestland sales and marketing executive Bob Brant said in a statement that the AW119 could offer infrared cameras and other features, and that maintenance could be done "right here in Philadelphia."

Some, however, question the need for a third aircraft in a city has reportedly been beefing up its foot patrols. Police department spokeswoman Christine O'Brien told Philly.com that the additional aircraft would "enhance our ability to protect and serve the citizens of our great city," and that the aircraft purchase would be supported by state and federal grants.

While no firm cost has been determined for the aircraft, a similar model has been priced out at about $3.6 million.
