German Authorities Would Like To Chat With P-51 Pilot

Plane Lost Canopy En Route To Berlin Air Show

Should you happen to be the British pilot of a vintage P-51 Mustang who lost his head... er, his canopy... in the skies over Germany this week, as you were flying to the Berlin Air Show, authorities would like to have a chat with you.

Police in Germany told Reuters the plane's canopy evidently came off Wednesday over the west German town of Muenster. No one was hurt by the falling debris, although pieces of glass rained down within about a meter of a woman on the ground. A small food stand was also destroyed.

Perhaps most puzzling about the entire incident, however, is that the plane continued on to its destination... where its pilot then vanished.

"The pilot just kept on flying, apparently as if nothing had happened," a police spokesman in Muenster said.

Police later found the plane -- sans canopy -- about 250 miles away, on the ground at Berlin's Schoenefeld Airport... parked in line for the International Air Show.

But so far, the airplane's pilot -- who took off from near London for his flight to the show -- hasn't come forward. Given the level of information they have about the plane, though, it's safe to say German authorities know who the pilot is... and that he probably won't be able to fly out of Berlin without speaking to police first.

A new canopy would probably be a good idea, too.
