Rotor Separation Occurred Before Helicopter Accident In Mali

German Tiger Aircraft Was Flying A Peacekeeping Mission

A German Tiger military helicopter lost its main rotor prior to going down while on a peacekeeping mission in Mali last month, according to a defense ministry report.

Reuters reports that, according to the report, "once the vehicle had started to descend, parts of the aircraft broke off, including the main rotor blades."

The flight had been normal up until the time that the aircraft began breaking up, the report said.

The aircraft had been flying at about 135 knots and an altitude of 1,800 feet when the accident occurred. Both military personnel on board were fatally injured in the accident.

The aircraft require additional maintenance in the hot desert conditions, according to the Reuters report. However, the official military report said it was too early to identify the cause of the accident.

German officials said at the time that there was no indication that the aircraft was brought down by an attack.
