Qantas Chairman Says World Has Too Many Airlines

Calls for an overhaul of international aviation sector and says majority of airlines should not exist

And now for something completely different... Qantas Chairman Margaret Jackson, speaking at a luncheon hosted by the Australian Institute of Company Directors in Sydney, Australia this past week, told the audience that she believes the international airline industry is overdue for an overhaul, and that many of the existing airlines should not be in operation.

Jackson added that there are over 200 airlines around the world, and each one of these airlines has their own operating system. In almost every other industry, she commented, there are usually less than 10 "main players." Historically, she commented that national regulations tend to protect foreign-based carriers, but it has become evident to her that this model is overdue for change.

She also warned that the process of change and restructuring will be a painful one.
