Gone West: Morry Hummel

Kit Plane Innovator Dies at 94

Morry Hummel, creator of the "Hummel Bird" and founder of Hummel Aviation, died at his home on February 4, 2010. He is preceded in death by his wife Myra, who passed on December 30, 2009.

Hummel began his love of aviation early, winning awards for his model airplanes starting in seventh grade.  He did metal work for Howard Aircraft before moving to the experimental department at Curtis Wright in Columbus, OH.

After soloing in 1959, Hummel bought a partially complete Corbin Jr. Ace and spent three years rebuilding and finishing his first kit plane.  In 1980 his extensively modified plans for a Windwagon caught national attention and was dubbed the "Hummel Bird."

Hummel Aviation was opened in 1982 to help the homebuilt community and still supplies aviation enthusiasts with plans and kits.  Their engines, Hummel Bird, Ultra Cruiser, and Ultra Cruiser Plus are lasting legacies that will keep the memory of Morry Hummel alive and well for many years to come.
