But SpaceShipOne Pilot Says Flight Was A Bit "Intimidating" At Times

So... how was it?

Mike Melvill, SpaceShipOne's 62-year old pilot on a historic journey to the edge of space Monday, described his suborbital flight as "almost religious experience. You really do get the feeling that you've touched the face of God when you do something like this."

What we might not consider, watching videotape from the cockpit during Melvill's journey, is the sounds he heard. During the boost phase, he said, as his spacecraft approached Mach 3.2, "You can hear this incredible rushing sound like some hurricane coming by. The thing just has a high-frequency roar to it, that's very, very intimidating."

Perhaps most breath-taking: The View.

"It was really an awesome sight," Melvill said of looking down on the Earth, seeing it curve away at the horizon.
