Woman Flying Standby Booted From Southwest Flight

Why? An Obese Teen Needed Two Seats

A woman flying standby on Southwest Airlines reportedly was asked to leave her seat to make room for an overweight teenager who needed two.

The woman, who has asked to remain anonymous, told the Sacramento Bee that she had paid full fare for the last seat Southwest said was available on the plane. She had no sooner settled in when she was told by the cabin crew that the needed to go back to the terminal so that the 14 year old could have two seats on the plane.

The woman, who is a frequent flyer on Southwest, said the flight crew was rude when she protested the move. A representative for the airline said officials would be apologizing to the woman. "We know this was awkward, and we should have handled it better, said spokeswoman Marilee McInnis.

Earlier this year, Southwest asked an overweight passenger to leave an airplane. Apparently this more recent method didn't work any better.
