The Ballad Of Rare Bear And Dago Red

Or, How One Wrong Turn Can Cost You A Race

At first glance, it looked like Dago Red had won. When the checker flag dropped on the Unlimited Gold race at Reno Sunday, Skip Holm's P-51 was first across the finish line.

But hold onto your socks, race fans. Seems Holm cut inside one of the pylons marking the six-lap race. That forced a time penalty and meant the second-place finisher, John Penney's Rare Bear, was the true winner.

"Dago Red (top qualifier and reigning champion) is pretty doggone fast," Lyle Shelton, Rare Bear's owner and former champion pilot told the Reno Gazette-Journal Sunday.

Holm was equally gracious in his remarks to the newspaper. "If anybody thinks that Rare Bear isn’t the fastest airplane out here," he said, "they need to do some more thinking," he said.
