Twin Otter Wreckage Found In Indonesia

All On Board Were Lost

The week-long search for a deHavilland DHC-6 that went down in the jungles of Indonesia's West Papua province was spotted over the weekend. All 18 people on board -- 14 passengers and four crew members -- were lost in the mishap.

As ANN reported last week, searchers scoured the mountainous jungles of central West Papua Province for several days before calling off their search for the missing aircraft. The Twin Otter departed Timika at 1050 local and was to have landed at Enarotali 25 minutes later. It never arrived.

"The plane was believed to have hit the mountain and was totally burned... all passengers are feared dead," said Lt. Col. Paulus Waterpau, police chief in Timika, who was quoted by the Associated Press.

The aircraft, which belonged to GT Air -- a charter service owned by the local government -- was partially submerged in a river, according to Waterpau. Recovery teams were set to begin removing the bodies on Tuesday.
