Just Aircraft STOL Airplane Down In South Carolina

Designer Troy Woodland Uninjured In The Accident

Troy Woodland, the designer of the Just Aircraft JA30 Super STOL airplane, was flying one of his aircraft near the Walhalla, SC-based manufacturing plant on Sunday afternoon when a problem occurred.

The Independent Mail newspaper reports that the engine on the airplane "died," and Woodland was forced to make an off-airport landing. Both he and a passenger were uninjured in the accident, according to the paper, but the airplane was heavily damaged.

According to the report, Woodland attempted to land on a street in a housing development that has yet to see any construction. But the street was far from flat, and Oconee County Fire Chief Charlie King said that made the landing difficult. “There’s not really anything that you would call a flat spot in Oconee County,” he said.

Several people called 911 to report the accident, but Woodland said it "wasn't a major deal. Everyone was OK and walked away."

The plane sustained substantial damage, but Woodland said he planned to be flying again on Monday.
