Iowa Airshow Grounded Again

Spencer Airport Can't Find A Person To Take The Reins Of The show

For the fourth year in a row, there will be no airshow at Spencer Municipal Airport (KSPW) in central Iowa for lack of an organizer for the event.

The airport recently announced that its annual Flight Breakfast event will be held on June 15, but there has not been an airshow held in conjunction with the event since 2010, according to a report in the Spencer, IA Daily Reporter.

And while the airshow is definitely off for this year, airport officials remain hopeful that there can be a larger event in 2015. Tim Steffen, chair of the Airport Board of Trustees, said that "it's too late now if anyone were to come forward to have an airshow this year. There are a lot of FAA forms to fill out and turn in, and the process is slow from the FAA end."

Gayle Brandt, who formerly chaired the airshow event, said she had simply gotten burned out on doing the show, and it was time for someone else to take the reins. The chair is responsible for fundraising, organizing, marketing, and doing that FAA paperwork.

Fortunately, the money that has been raised by the Flight Breakfast over the past three years has gone into a fund to help bring back the airshow, and this year's proceeds will also be placed in that account. So who ever might come in to take over the show has a place to start.

And, the airport is home to a regional aerobatic competition in July. The three-day Doug Yost Challenge will be held July 18-20, and while the routines are not flown close to the ground, Brandt said "people are welcome to come out and usually do."
