LET-410 Down In Colombia, Eight Lost

A Czech-built Let-410 twin-engine turboprop is reported down on the small Colombian island of Old Providence. The aircraft, in commercial service, was enroute to another nearby Colombian island, San Andres, off the coast of Nicaragua.

Martin Gonzalez, of Aerocivil (Colombia's civil aviation agency), has reported that the crash killed eight people, including a three year-old child. Six others are reported injured. “It had just taken off when some type of technical problem apparently happened, and it crashed at the edge of the runway,” observed Gonzalez.

The aircraft was operated by West Caribbean Airways. Police spokesmen indicated that the flight crew was killed and that all on board were Colombian nationals. The Colombian Air Force conducted aerial evacuation of the injured, who were removed to Cartagena.

Colombia-based West Caribbean Airways began commercial service in 1998 and flies domestically. It utilizes a fleet of 14 aircraft.
