Israeli Jet Bombs UN Outpost In Hezbollah Fighting

Mixed results after a series of Israeli bombing raids against targets in Lebanon.

In one case, Israel says it killed the senior commander of its enemy... the Muslim guerilla group Hezbollah. In the other... Israeli aircraft apparently hit a UN peacekeeper outpost in Beirut.

Two peacekeepers are dead... two others are missing. Those two are thought to be buried in the rubble of the peacekeeper's building.

Israel isn't so sure, though... suggesting the UN post may have been hit by Hezbollah guerillas.

In any case, says a spokesman in Jerusalem, the UN post was most assuredly caught in the middle of intense fighting... the kind that has raged for more than two weeks now in Southern Lebanon and Northern Israel.

But at UN headquarters in New York, Secretary General Kofi Annan sees it very differently.

He says he's deeply distressed by what was apparently a deliberate strike against the peacekeepers' outpost. Israeli officials say that's an outrageous assertion.
