Pratt & Whitney Eyes Widebody Market For Geared Turbofans

Engines Could Be Scaled Up For Larger Aircraft, CEO Says

The CEO of Pratt & Whitney says its geared turbofan engine which is intended to power the A320neo could be modified to service Airbus and Boeing widebody airliners.

Pratt & Whitney CEO David Hess said the company expects an "astounding" number of orders for the A320neo at the Paris Air Show. He told Reuters that he sees geared turbofans as having the potential to power widebody aircraft as well, including most immediately a potential replacement for the Boeing 777, should that be considered.

Analysts say that the A320neo has allowed the engine manufacturer to mount a strong comeback into the narrow body market. The company has already received over 1,200 orders for the engine for CSeries, MRJ, and A320neo airplanes.

Hess said he hopes to be able to hang engines on the Boeing 737 if the planemaker decides to re-design rather than re-engine its workhorse airliner.
