Aviat Factory Fly-In Draws An Enthusiastic Crowd

About 100 Flyers Attended...

With good weather in the Afton area, Aviat Aircraft drew in a good group of pilots and aircraft. Altogether, over 100 people and 30 aircraft came together to enjoy three days of flying, seminars, and some excellent food prepared by Aviat President Stu Horn.

Arrivals started on Friday, September 5 and everyone departed on Sunday. There were a number of discussion and lecture sessions, highlighted by Dr. Brent Blue's presentation on the onset and effects of hypoxia.

Most people who flew in participated in a timed rally over a 44-mile course. The object was to estimate the time required to fly the three legs and whoever came in closest to their projected time, won. This year's winner came within 49 seconds of his planned ETA.

One aircraft that drew considerable attention and was used for a number of demo flights was Aviat's new Pup, a derivative of the popular Husky. Other people chose to take their first ride in a Pitts S-2C aerobatic biplane.

"The Fly-In has become known as a casual affair," said Stu Horn. "And though we get pretty serious in some of the seminars, the overall tone is relaxed and enjoyable. Quite a few people called us after they got home to offer thanks for staging the fly-in. It seemed pretty obvious that everyone had a good time."

Aviat Aircraft will hold another factory Fly-In in September, 2004.
