Filmmaker Establishes A 'GoFundMe' Presence For The Project
A filmmaker creating a movie about the restoration of a C-47 has established GoFundMe page to help finance the project.
The filmmaker, Paul Matraves of Fitzgibbon in Queensland, Australia, said his grandfather flew C-47s during WWII, and it became "[t]he aircraft type I had grown up to adore. The aircraft type that has cemented its place not only in world history, but in the much more insignificant history of my family. The aircraft type that could only be described as a member of the family and the aircraft type that I have dreamt of flying, or at least, being involved with."
The aircraft is being restored by David Kingshott. According to the documentary website, the former United States Army Air Force (USAAF) aircraft was built in 1944 and operated extensively in the Pacific Theatre during World War Two with the 39th Airlift Squadron.
After the war the aircraft was used in a number of different roles, its last carrying cargo between Melbourne and Tasmania, before being retired as a museum exhibit in the early 1980s. Now, the group led by Kingshott has a goal of making the C-47 airworthy again.
On the GoFundMe page, Matraves says he is not the kind of person who can turn wrenches to help make the airplane fly, but "what I can do. I can tell David's story. I can share David's message and hopefully in doing so, inspire many, many more people than even he thought possible."
The effort is off to a slow start. Matraves has only raised a little over $20,000 of his $148,000 goal over the past seven months.
