GoAir Says Petite Female FAs Reduce Fuel Costs

Focuses Hiring On Slim Women As Cabin Crew

Indian airline GoAir says that they are hiring slim women as flight attendants simply because they weigh less, which translates into substantial fuel savings for the airline.

GoAir said that its flight attendant ratio of 60:40 women to men was still the most male-heavy in the Indian airline industry, but that they will be hiring more women in the future because they weigh on average 33-44 pounds less than men. Increasing the number of women employed as cabin crew to 70 percent, which GoAir says is the industry average, will save the airline nearly a half-million dollars annually in fuel costs.

CNN reports that the airline denies that it is establishing gender-based hiring policy.

The airline says it is taking other steps to reduce weight on its airplanes. For instance, airline CEO Giorgio De Roni told CNN that the size of its in-flight magazines will be reduced, and that potable water tanks are no longer being filled to capacity.

The airline said it plans to hire some 2,000 flight attendants in the next seven years.
