CF-18 Pilot Punches Out At Yellowknife

Second Incident There In Two Days

A Canadian Forces pilot was injured Saturday when he apparently lost control of his CF-18 upon landing, officials said. It was the second incident at Yellowknife (Alberta) in two days.

"It was rainy. (Investigators) are examining runway surface conditions to see if they played a factor," said Canadian Forces spokeswoman Capt. Joanna Campbell of Saturday's accident. The aircraft, now resting on the runway, carried two live missiles. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police sent officers to guard the crash site until an explosive ordnance disposal team could safely disarm the weapons.

The accident came just a day after a missile fell from the wing of another CF-18. Both aircraft had been monitoring Russian air force exercises, making sure they didn't violate Canadian airspace. The errant missile landed on the driving range of a closed golf course. No one was hurt.

Flights at Yellowknife were cancelled as the airport remained closed for much of Saturday. That closure was responsible for delaying the arrival of the EOD team, according to local news reports.
