Medical Helo Hits Structure At San Antonio International Airport

Contact With What May Have Been A Cell Phone Tower Damaged Aircraft

A helicopter flying for the Air Med emergency transportation service hit a structure at San Antonio International Airport in TX and was forced to make an emergency landing early Sunday morning. The crew and the patient being transported did not suffer injuries due to the indicent.

An FAA investigator said the contact tore off the left landing skid of the aircraft, which would have made it difficult to land. But according to a report from television station KSAT in San Antonio, a mattress laid on the ground gave the aircraft enough support to make an emergency landing without tipping over onto its side.

The patient was transferred to another helicopter operated by a different company and transported to a nearby hospital. No additional details were immediately available.
