Airborne-Unmanned 12.04.18: GA-ASI Ground Control, Skeye Acquired, Censys Tech

Also: FAA Exec Appointment, InstantEye Mk-3, XLCargoDrones Center, ALTI UAS Enhanced VTOL UAV

A “Certifiable” (STANAG 4671-compliant) Ground Control Station (C-GCS) from GA-ASI was used for the first time in October to fly a Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA).

The flight originated from Yuma, Arizona and flew GA-ASI’s MQ-9B SkyGuardian RPA. Aircraft flight critical functions were tested successfully, including hold modes, landing gear, flap operation, and “hand flying” of the aircraft. Linden Blue, CEO, GA-ASI, noted that, “We continue on a path towards integrating RPA into non-segregated national and international airspace, where they can fly safely alongside commercial aircraft. To achieve that goal, we are producing STANAG-compliant Ground Control Stations in addition to STANAG-compliant SkyGuardian aircraft.” Japan-based Terra Drone has acquired a majority stake in European drone service provider Skeye. Skeye will become the European headquarters of Terra Drone. With this acquisition, Terra Drone has become one of the largest drone service companies, with more than 250 employees and presence in all continents. Daytona Beach, FL based commercial drone manufacturer, Censys Technologies, has introduced the Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) FAA waiver application aid, claiming a "great success rate." With a BVLOS waiver from the FAA, drone operators can operate Censys aircraft out to a 2.7 mile range from the Ground Control Station (GCS). The extra distance from the GCS improves accessible coverage area from below 5 square miles (VLOS) up to over 22 square miles (BVLOS). Currently, Censys Technologies offers Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) and BVLOS drones with plans to release a hybrid VTOL version of their Sentaero V2 in late 2018. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unmanned!!!
