New White House Petition Asks To Expand Crew Rest Regs To Cargo Ops

Controversy Over Curious FAA Omission Of Cargo Operations From Crew Rest Regs Grows

The latest in a series of aviation related petitions to the White House asks that the FAA reconsider its recent announcement of new crew rest regulations for commercial operations... regs that surprisingly and inexplicably omitted cargo operations.

The petition, entitled, "Direct the FAA to mandate all-cargo airlines comply with newly established Flightcrew Member Duty and Rest Requirements" notes that, "On Dec. 21, the FAA released new requirements for airlines to mitigate flight crew fatigue, which is a factor in many aviation accidents. However, the FAA elected to exempt all-cargo airlines such as UPS, FedEx, and Atlas because they feel like it's okay for a cargo planes to crash more frequently. The FAA attaches a value of $6.2 Million to each human life, and have ruled that the cost to these corporations to include them in the new rules have exceeded $6.2M per life they expect to save. As cold as that sounds, FAA's logic is flawed and a good read of their regulatory impact analysis shows costs have been greatly overstated while benefits have been greatly understated. They assume 1 crash will only kill the crew, ignoring a potential catastrophe a large cargo jet crash can cause."

A growing number of aviation organizations, companies and persons have called for the FAA to include cargo flights in the recent a plans... announced after years of delays.
