'Bar Bet' Bomb Threat Grounds Austrian Flight

The Worse Drunk Dial Ever

It appears the bomb threat that forced an Austrian Airlines flight bound for Frankfurt to return to Vienna last weekend was nothing more than... wait for it... a rather thoughtless joke.

An anonymous caller tipped authorities there was a bomb onboard the flight... but, of course, there wasn't. But here's where the story takes an almost surreal turn: police were able to trace the call back to a Vienna hotel, where they found a German businessman who worked with one of the passengers onboard the plane.

Germany's DPA news service reports the man admitted he placed the bomb threat because of a "drinking bet" with his colleague, on whether the other man would make it back to Frankfurt.

Seems like a rather labored way to make a buck, if you ask us... especially since the caller now faces up to a three-year prison sentence for his crime. Oh, and he can also probably expect Austrian Airlines to sue him for damages, as well.

Just goes to show... never, EVER, "drunk dial" an airline.
