Airborne 07.09.18: OSH18 Drone Airshow!, PAL-V At Farnborough, Virgin Orbit

Also: FAA Won't Regulate Legroom, Cup Holder SAIB... Really, World Heli-Day, Electric Pump Jet Refueller

For the first time in North America, a drone light show will be part of an air show when EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 presents up to 100 lighted drones in flight during night air shows on July 25 and 28.

Great Lakes Drone Company, based in Watervliet, Michigan, will be flying their drones and is one of just two U.S. companies authorized by the FAA for such displays. During AirVenture, the LED-equipped drones will perform a 10-minute “The History of Flight” show complete with musical accompaniment. From July 16 - 22, the PAL-V Liberty will have its debut at the Farnborough International Airshow. "The production model is the moment of truth. The moment where the wall between fiction and facts is torn down. A production model is the last stage in the R&D process before starting full production and delivery," said Robert Dingemanse, CEO of PAL-V. "All certifications required for commercialization will be granted on the basis of this production model. It's the pivotal point that separates pioneers from dreamers." The FAA has granted a launch license to Virgin Orbit for the first launch of its LancherOne reusable launch vehicle. "Virgin Orbit ... is authorized to conduct a reusable launch vehicle (RLV) mission," the FAA license states. "Virgin Orbit is authorized to launch LauncherOne (L1) utilizing a Boeing 747-400 carrier aircraft. The RLV mission authorized by this license commences and concludes at Mojave Air and Space Port." All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
