Airborne 05.10.17: ICON A5 Fatality, NBAA v Santa Monica, EASA Drone Regs

An accident occurred at just after 0900 local time, Monday, on Lake Berryessa in Napa County, CA that fatally injured two people. The airplane involved was an ICON A5.

The accident site was reportedly inaccessible by land. First responders had to use boats to get to the accident scene. The plane appeared to impact the shoreline between Pleasure Cove Marina and Markley Cove Resort, according to the report. A photo posted online showed the ICON A5 badly damaged along the shore of the lake. The canopy appears to have been separated from the aircraft, and the tail section is broken off and lying at a right angle to the main wreckage. There were two people on board the amphibious LSA. Both were employees of Icon. The NBAA has responded to a May 4 order from the U.S. Court of Appeals, delivered in connection with recent actions taken by the association to challenge an agreement between the FAA and the City of Santa Monica, which would restrict or ultimately prohibit aviation access to Santa Monica Municipal Airport. EASA has released a proposal to regulate the operation of small drones in Europe. All interested parties are welcome to comment this proposal from May 12 until August 12, 2017. The proposal provides a framework to safely operate drones while allowing this industry to remain agile, to innovate and continue to grow. The risk posed to people on the ground and to other aircraft as well as privacy, security and data protection issues created by such drones are also taken into account. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
