Alaska Airlines Adjusts Flight Plan To Delight Astronomers

Flight Allowed Passengers A Rare View Of A Solar Eclipse

Passengers aboard an Alaska Airlines flight Tuesday were given a rare opportunity to view a solar eclipse at 35,000 feet, and the show was no accident.

USA Today reports that according to the Alaska Airlines blog, the plan was hatched a year ago. That was when Joseph Rao, and associate astronomer at the American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium, discovered that a flight he would be on would fly through the path of the eclipse (There's someone who makes reservations early, ed). He called the airline, and they made the necessary adjustment, including a 25 minute delay in the departure time of the flight, so that the passengers would get an unprecedented view of the phenomenon.

The flight from Anchorage, AK to Honolulu, HI, reportedly had about a dozen astronomers and "eclipse chasers" on board ... as well as about 150 other passengers.

The eclipse was captured on video by Mike Kentrianakis of the American Astronomical Society, which is linked below.
