Manitowoc Cancels Airshow For Second Year In A Row

'Thunder On The Lakeshore' Became Too Expensive To Produce

The Thunder on the Lakeshore Airshow in Manitowoc, WI has been cancelled for 2015, the second year in a row that the event has been scratched.

HTRNews.com reports that the reason was pretty straightforward; Manitowoc Aviation Resources, which is the sponsoring body, says it can't afford to put on the show.

A news release from The Chamber of Manitowoc County cited the loss of military acts as one of the primary reasons for cancelling the event. "Thunder on the Lakeshore has built its program around a combination of civilian and military acts," the release said. "The loss of the military participation has left a huge hole in the event that cannot be made up by any other civilian acts." But they also said the air show is an expensive proposition that is not getting any cheaper. "The overall cost of producing the air show has increased significantly," the release said.

The group has sponsored 21 air shows in the past, depending on the work of hundreds of volunteers and sponsors.

But while there will be no Thunder on the Lakeshore in 2015, the group left the door open for an event in 2016, "should should economic conditions and government policies become more favorable," the release said.
