FAA Places Additional Restrictions On Foreign Carriers At KSFO

Restricts Use Of Parallel Runways To 'Reduce Distractions'

Non-U.S. airlines are no longer able to use San Francisco International Airport's (KSFO) parallel runways at the same time as another arriving flight following the accident involving an Asiana Airlines Boeing 777.

The FAA placed the restriction on foreign carriers arriving at KSFO in VFR conditions to "minimize distractions during a critical phase of flight," according to a statement from the agency.

The Associated Press reports that the FAA has also recommended that pilots of non-U.S.-flagged carriers use GPS even during approaches that could be made visually. The agency said it has noted an increase in the number of go-arounds by airplanes that have made visual approaches among foreign carriers.

U.S.-flagged carriers may still land simultaneously on the parallel runways in VFR conditions at KSFO, but controllers are staggering the approaches by foreign airlines.
