Airborne 12.08.17: AMA Joins GoFly, Mackay Trophy Heroes, KSMO To The Rescue

Also: Orion Parachute Test, Workforce Shortage Issues, Cygnus Departs ISS, Myrtle Beach AirShow

AMA has partnered with Boeing to support GoFly, an incentive competition that encourages innovators to create a safe and easy-to-use personal flying device. “

AMA is excited to partner with GoFly in support of this creative initiative,” said Dave Mathewson, AMA executive director. “AMA has always supported advancements in aviation technology, and we look forward to witnessing the success of the GoFly program.” On Nov. 2, 2016, fourteen AC-130U Gunship crewmembers provided close-air-support to a U.S. Special Forces team and 43 Afghan soldiers near Kunduz, Afghanistan. The crew's persistent fire support, presence of mind and courage during two hours of intense combat ultimately saved 50 lives. For their actions, the aircrew of the AC-130U Gunship known as "Spooky 43" were presented the 2016 Mackay Trophy by Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Stephen W. Wilson. First awarded in 1912, the Mackay Trophy honors the most meritorious U.S. Air Force flight of the previous year. The idiots who have demanded the destruction of the Santa Monica airport are looking more foolish than ever this week... The Santa Monica ATC Tower has been providing critical support to aircraft fighting, reporting on and responding to the horrific Skirball Fire. Aircraft using SMO airspace included water-dropping helicopters, Los Angeles Police Department Helicopters and newsgathering aircraft. Despite Santa Monica City Council efforts to close 100 year-old Santa Monica Municipal Airport, the airport and it’s FAA-staffed Control Tower continue to provide critical air traffic services for fighting hazards of all kinds -- for now. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
