Crew Safe After AH-64 Apache Makes Emergency Landing In Baghdad

Helo Reportedly Came Under Enemy Fire

An AH-64 Apache helicopter made an emergency landing Tuesday after coming under fire over eastern Baghdad, according to media reports. The two crewmembers onboard the stricken helo were safely evacuated.

The helicopter was over the predominantly Shiite New Baghdad district when it came under small arms fire, US military officials said. The amount of damage to the helicopter is not known.

US military spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Garver said the incident was under investigation. The crewmembers were taken to a US military hospital for evaluation.

Tuesday's downing came hours after an MQ-1 Predator UAV crashed while landing Monday night at Balad Air Base. The unmanned aircraft impacted the end of the runway at approximately 2300 local time, as it returned from an armed reconnaissance mission for coalition ground forces in the area.

Officials do not believe hostile action was a factor in the Predator's downing, but a board will be convened to investigate.
