Aero-TV: Profiles In Aviation -- Pitcairn PA-18 Autogiro (Part 1)

Pilot Andrew King Describes Flying the World's Only Flying Pitcairn PA-18

EAA AirVenture 2009 was a momentous turnaround for Jack Tiffany, leading restorer of the Pitcairn PA-18.  Last year, the team suffered an unfortunate setback when, with only a week left until EAA AirVenture 2008, the aircraft suffered significant rotor blade damage during flight testing and its maiden flight to Oshkosh had to be canceled.

This year, however, the Pitcairn PA-18 made a stunning arrival for curious crowds.  Flying to EAA AirVenture from its primary home in Spring Hill, Ohio, the Pitcairn PA-18 is a result of nearly a decade of dedicated effort by the team at Leading Edge Restorations.

One of only 19 Pitcairn PA-18s to have been built from 1932 until 1933, it is the only flying representation left in the world.

Aero-TV took the opportunity to speak with the Pitcairn PA-18s pilot, Andrew King, about his experience with the aircraft, as well as what it is like to fly a machine that is now 77 years old.
