Airborne 11.18.19: DeLand 2019, BelugaXL Cert, GAMA 3Q/19

Also: 1000 New easyJet Pilots, Drone Conviction, Flight Options Academy, Transportation Career Bill

The DeLand Sport Aviation Expo wrapped up Saturday, and despite uncooperative weather, organizers feel the show was a success.

Jana Filip, Sport Aviation Administrator said the event, now in its fourth year, pretty much held its own compared to previous years. And even though temperatures were chilly, and there was off-and-on rain each day, it couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of the people who made the trip to central Florida. Insanely ugly but none-the-less lovable for its cargo carrying capabilities, the BelugaXL has received its Type Certification from EASA, paving the way for entry-into-service by early 2020. The BelugaXL allows for 30% extra transport capacity being 23 feet longer and about three feet wider than its BelugaST predecessor. With the largest cargo bay cross-section of all existing cargo aircraft worldwide, the BelugaXL can carry two A350 XWB wings compared to the BelugaST, which can only carry one. With a maximum payload of 51 metric tons, the BelugaXL has a range of 2,200 nautical miles. GAMA recently published a nine-month industry update with the release of its third quarter GA shipments and billings report. Aggregate business jet and piston airplane deliveries continued experiencing increases through the first nine months of 2019 compared to last year, whereas deliveries of turboprops and rotorcraft declined. "The first nine months of 2019 show positive results for business jets and piston airplanes," said GAMA Boss, Pete Bunce. "Turboprops and rotorcraft, however, continued to encounter headwinds. Despite these mixed results, our manufacturers continue their investments in advanced factory machinery, design software, and associated processes that keep product development cycles robust and in-turn bring advances in fuel efficiency, capability, and safety to the global fleet." All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
