MiG-21 Down In India

Pilot Safe

An Indian MiG-21 went down in Rajasthan Tuesday. The pilot was able to eject and is said to be in good condition.

The government in New Delhi said the Soviet-era fighter, flown by a pilot identified as Squadron Leader Kaila, was on a routine training mission near the town of Bikaner. A spokesman for the Indian Air Force said the aircraft suffered a "mechanical failure" before it crashed.

The aircraft was a Type-75, one of the MiG-21 variants India is in the process of phasing out.

More than 60 Indian MiG-21s have gone down over the past decade. But the Times of India reports that number declined dramatically after former IAF chief, Air Chief Marshal S. Krishnaswamy instituted a number of safety measures before retiring.

Last year, the Indian Air Force lost approximately 15 aircraft. All were Jaguars or Mirage 2000s, according to the Times.
