Been Busy Lately?

Air Traffic Up 20 Percent Worldwide

The predicted light of the end of the tunnel continues to burn brightly for the airline industry around the world. The IATA reports passenger traffic is up 20-percent worldwide so far this year.

"International passenger traffic growth in the first half of 2004 substantially exceeded our expectations," said IATA Director-General Giovanni Bisignani in a statement to ANN. "If current growth trends prevail, and barring any unforeseen event, we could end the year with double-digit growth, surpassing our March expectation of 7.5 percent for the year."

Cargo traffic was also on the rise during the first six months of this year, up 13-percent from the same period last year.

Of course, it's not all CAVU for the airlines. The IATA warns rising fuel costs could put the kibosh on the fledgling recovery.

"If airlines can maintain strict control on their costs and capacity, the strong traffic recovery for this year could see the industry break even or better," said Bisignani.
