ICAO: Worldwide Air Traffic Up By 14 Percent In '04

Strength In Middle East, Asian Markets

By any measure, it's an impressive rebound: The ICAO reports global air traffic up 14-percent in 2004 when compared to the year before.

"Strong growth was again shown by the airlines in the Middle East, followed by the airlines in Asia/Pacific, which in 2003 were negatively affected by the outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)," said a statement issued by the Montreal-based aviation organization.

In North America, the ICAO said the increase in air traffic was close to 14-percent. If you take North America out of the equation, the worldwide increase comes to about 15-percent.

In essence, the organization said, 100,000 more people flew this year than last worldwide.

Air freight was up by 13-percent around the world.

Load factors were up two points from 71 to 73 percent.
