Aero-TV: Thinking It Through - Aspen Avionics Looks Ahead

“You Can’t Use An Airplane As A Beta Test-Site”…

In this video interview that took place out in the North 40 at EAA AirVenture 2016, ANN News Editor, Tom Patton, has a sit down with the President and CEO of Aspen Avionics, John Uczekaj, to talk about the aircraft avionics business in general, not about specific Aspen products. This discussion results in some fascinating information about the prospect of new FAA certification regulations and how avionics play’s into the overall safety of aviation.

As the discussion targets potential changes to FAR 23 certification of avionics, Uczekaj moves into the issue of how the design and operation of such equipment has such a direct effect on aviation safety. Uczekaj presents an example of this when he says, “You can’t use an airplane as a beta test-site; we can’t put things out in a beta environment like you can on an iPad or iPhone.”

The conversation moves on to critically important topics such as distractions in the cockpit and how avionics fit into that total picture. This video provides some fascinating background as to how the industry works and how companies like Aspen Avionics see the future of aviation safety. Even if you’re flying a no-radio Piper Cub, this is a video worth watching.
