China Plans Unmanned Moon Orbital Mission

Hopes To Launch And Recover A Lunar Orbiter Later This Year

China is continuing its ambitious space program, announcing Sunday that it plans to launch and recover a lunar orbiter later this year.

China's State Administration of Science, Technology, and Industry (SASTIND) said the mission will launch before the end of 2014. The spacecraft would travel to the Moon and then re-enter the Earth's atmosphere intact.

The French news service AFP reports that, according to SASTIND, the orbiter has already been moved to the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in the southwestern province of Sichuan.

China's space ambitions include a permanent orbiting space station by 2020, and a mission to collect samples from Mars and return them to Earth in 2030.
