Airline Bankruptcy Strands Thousands Of International Travelers

Some 13,000 Aigle Azur Passengers Suddenly Found Themselves Without Flights

The sudden bankruptcy filing by the French airline Aigle Azur left some 13,000 travelers scrambling for alternate flights, many of them international.

Fox News reports that the carrier filed for bankruptcy last week. Jean-Baptiste Djebbari, France’s secretary of state for transport said that about 11,000 of those passengers were in Algeria when their airline stopped flying.

Djebbari said in an interview with the French TV channel RMV that he met with all French airlines to ask them to help in getting those travelers to their destinations. "I especially would like to thank Air France for chartering additional flights to Algeria," he said.

Still, Djebbari said it could take as long as three weeks to get all of the passengers home.

Fox News reports that, according to television station KTLA, several bidders have expressed an interest in acquiring the bankrupt airline. Those bids were scheduled to be considered at a company meeting Friday.
