India Is Seeking New Fighters

Wants To Keep Up With Rival Pakistan

In light of Pakistan's possible purchase of up to 44 F-16s, Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief Air Marshal S. P. Tyagi has written to the Indian government defense ministry asking for more multi-role aircraft to help maintain air superiority for his nation.

The New Kerala News reports the Air Marshal is concerned the number of IAF fighter squadrons is at an all-time low.

The Indian Air Force is looking at proposals to buy 126 new aircraft to stock its 36 squadrons, but the deal is not expected to be finalized for several years.

In the meantime, Tyagi wants to buy 40 interim aircraft to keep his force from becoming further depleted. India's mainstay fighter, the Russian-designed Mig-21, has had a spotty history, with numerous crashes bringing India's fighter strength to its lowest point in decades.

The IAF had earlier expressed interest in the French Mirage 2000, though Dassault has already closed the assembly lines.

The next best thing, according to the New Kerala News, is for the government to speed up the acquisition of the 126 new aircraft. Currently India is evaluating the Russian Mig 29, the US F-18 Hornet, and yes, the F-16 Fighting Falcon -- the same plane Pakistan wants to buy.
