Tucson Police Dept. Auctions Off Its One And Only Plane

Hopes To Replace With Newer Model

If you're a pilot looking for an older Skyhawk to restore, the Tucson (AZ) Police Department might have a deal for you. The department is auctioning off its 1966 Cessna 172G (similar to type shown below), to raise funds to purchase a newer aircraft.

The aircraft -- used for surveillance and aerial photography to support police operations -- is equipped with twin King KX155 nav/com/glideslope indicators, a King KN64 DME, and increased radius leading edges.

The auction started August 10, with an opening bid of $8,000. That number has since grown to $23,600 through Tuesday night. Bidding runs through September 7, although the department reserved the right to extend it if the reserve wasn't met (it was).

TPD Lt. Tom Earley told The Arizona Star if you're not a cop, you have some extra money -- and you haven't been convicted of felony drug trafficking (details, details...) the Cessna could be the plane for you.

"It’s a great plane for a general aviation enthusiast," he said. The department previously auctioned off two helicopters to private citizens.

Earley wouldn't disclose the exact missions the aircraft performed, saying that information isn't for public consumption. So, hey, you may get a little bit of intrigue for your money, too...
