Gulf Helicopters To Buy 15 AW189s

Qatar-Based Operator Serves Offshore Platforms

AgustaWestland has announced that Gulf Helicopters of Qatar has signed a preliminary sales contract for 15 AW189 helicopters for use in offshore oil transport missions.

The AW189 was developed to serve what the company says is a growing need for a versatile, affordable, multi-role helicopter in the eight-tonne class, and adds it has quickly found success for long-range missions, especially in the offshore oil and gas market. The twin-engine AW189 will enter service in early 2014, and is optimized for long-range offshore transport and search-and-rescue missions.

The cabin's standard configuration includes 16 seats, with options for a high-density 18-seat layout, or a long-range setup with 12 seats. The company notes the AW189 features exceptional external visibility and the latest in avionics technology. AgustaWestland says service will be available through its worldwide network, and a comprehensive array of simulator and training devices will be made available.

Gulf Helicopters is owned by Qatar Petroleum, and has been providing helicopter services since 1970 throughout the Middle East, India, Far East and North Africa. The operator's in-house maintenance and modification operation is an FAA-approved repair station and has been approved under EASA's Part 145. The company also expects EASA Part 147 approval as a training organization.
