Fire Warning Prompts Emergency Landing At Sea-Tac

False Alarm Onboard Southwest Airlines Jet

There was never any real danger, but the pilot of a Southwest Airlines flight into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport didn't know that when he radioed the tower Thursday morning, saying the plane might be on fire.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports a faulty fire sensor in the forward cargo section of the Boeing 737-300 caused the fire warning to illuminate in the cockpit.

Southwest spokeswoman Brandy King told the P-I the light went out after the pilot discharged the fire extinguishers in the cargo bay.

The flight from Salt Lake City, with 126 passengers onboard, then made an uneventful landing.

The aircraft was met by fire crews as a precaution, said airport spokeswoman Rachel Garson, but the 737 taxied to the terminal under its own power.

Passengers were offloaded through the jetway, as usual.
