Fitness Fanatic Runs Half Marathon Aboard A Balloon

Paces Off 13.3 Miles On A Treadmill In The Basket

Here's an aviation-related publicity stunt that's a little out of the ordinary. An Australian has run a half marathon ... 13.3 miles ... on a miniature treadmill in the basket of an airborne hot-air balloon.

Gizmodo relays a story for the the UK newspaper The Telegraph about Rob Ginnivan, who undertook the attempt in an effort to raise $100,000 (Australian) for the Heart Foundation by running on land, at sea, and in the air. Ginnivan said that the stunt was harder than it sounds. The size of the treadmill made in necessary for him to take much smaller strides than usual, and the rocking of the basket made it difficult for him to keep his balance.

Also, the basket had a slight incline, so he said it was like running uphill the entire time.

In all, Ginnivan said it took about twice as long for him to run the distance aboard the balloon than it would have on the ground.
