Sources: Airbus Snags Delta Deal For New Widebodies

Airline Will Purchase 50 Airplanes From The European Manufacturer

There is nothing official, but sources say that Delta Airlines is set to buy 50 widebody airliners from Airbus, grabbing the business from Boeing.

Leeham News and Comment reports that it has learned that Delta will buy 25 A350-900s and 25 A330-900s from Airbus. Boeing had pitched its 787-9 and 777-200LR aircraft to the carrier.

The dealbreaker, according to the sources, was delivery slots. Boeing reportedly could not guarantee deliveries of the Dreamliners, and had offered the 777s as an incentive. Airbus, on the other hand, was able to shift its delivery schedule enough to get Delta the A350s on a timeline it wanted.

Neither Airbus or Boeing would officially comment on the rumor. Delta plans to announce the deal on December 11, according to the report.
